EPA 609: Why get your EPA 609 Certification?
EPA 609 MVAC certification is required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which is designed to ensure that a majority of mobile refrigerant and automotive technicians — working with refrigerants and vehicle-based air-conditioning systems — are properly trained and qualified to handle these substances safely and responsibly. It is a required certification in order to work on any motor vehicle based A/C system.
Regardless of what EPA requirements there are, safe handling of refrigerants is paramount and can be hazardous if not done properly. At The Training Center, we focus a significant part of our EPA 609 certification on safety to ensure that individuals and technicians have the knowledge, skills, and fundamental concepts to safely handle and store refrigerants. Accidents and injuries are easily avoided when utilizing the core understanding of refrigerants, the refrigeration cycle components, and best practices.
Refrigerants have a negative impact on the environment if they are released into the atmosphere. Obtaining an EPA 609 certification through The Training Center helps to ensure that individuals are aware of the impacts refrigerants have on the environment. Every student is trained to handle them responsibly in an effort to minimize their environmental impact. Federally, in the United States, it is illegal to work with refrigerants without an EPA 608 or EPA 609 certification. Any individual who is not certified is not able to legally perform work on refrigeration systems. This applied to the home mechanic and DIY’er. Not only can it be extremely hazardous, without knowing the essential fundamentals of the refrigerants being used can lead to dangerous consequences.
For those looking to get a ‘leg-in’; an EPA 609 certification demonstrates a high level of knowledge and expertise in refrigeration work, which can support them advance careers and attract more opportunities. Even if an EPA 609 certification is not required, the incentive to advance and show a student mentality goes a long way in standing out when seeking advancement.
Undoubtedly, an EPA 609 certification is an important qualification for technicians who work with mobile and automotive refrigerant systems. The Training Center ensures all students are provided the tools to become properly trained and qualified to handle these substances safely and responsibly.
Keep in mind, an EPA 609 certification may only fulfill half the needs of an individual or employer. An EPA 608 certification may be required for specific refrigerant handling as well as purchasing of larger quantities or specific types of refrigerant. For example, many cars in the past have used R-22 refrigerant, which can only be purchased by an individual holding an EPA 608 certification. The Training Center is EPA-approved to provide both EPA 608 and EPA 608 instruction. A sound understanding of EPA regulations and the Clean Air Act is a core to the certification program. Following the program, a practice test allows students to pursue their studies at their own pace. An online proctored certification exam is offered. This online testing makes the process easy and convenient. Anyone can take an EPA certification program without any prior knowledge of air conditioners, hvac, or refrigerants.
